Hi All,

I have a problem with the air con unit inasmuch that it will only work blowing hot air on econ. The unit flashes on power up.

I've had a mobile chap to look at the system. Advised that there are no leaks and the system as been regassed. To try and find the problem we took a live feed from another source direct to the compressor. The compressor works and cold air was pumped into the cabin. I am assuming that the problem is between the control unit and the compressor or some sort of switch/valve. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The falshing display indicates a problem with the climate control system.

It could be low gas pressure but it could also be a whole hist of other faults....maybe just a stuck flap.....it may even be unrelated.....dodgy alternator....speedo sensor.

The simplist and cheapest way is to run diagnostics ( Vagcom ) on the system.

This will identify the fault.

Which part of the midlands are you in.....someone may be willing to help.

Year, model, engine etc would also help.

if you are in econ mode the compressor will not run just hot air with no cooling or de humidty also you cant tell how much is in the system untill you take it out and weight it back in

cheers dave

Thanks all, the vehicle is a 02 plate tdi ghia, I suppose I'll just have to get a diagnostics check.

Thanks, I've had the system drained an refilled. The control unit will switch to aircon but won't push out cold air

my betting is you are low on gas. thats why the cooling is not working as the low pressure switch attivates to protect the compresser. Thats why the compresser works when you put a live feed to it ie bypassing the pressure switch. Im sure you know not to run the compresser like that for long, as may damage compresser(if there is no gas in it).

Pressure switch is a 3 way affair - will inhibit operation on too low or too high pressure. i.e. too liitle gas or too much. Make sure that the correct weight of gas has been filled - There is a plate showing the correct weight next to the bonnect catch mechanism - 2 quantites are shown depending whter you have single or dual cc system - note most vehicles have single systems - the dual systems have rear air vents in the roof lining and only one electric opening rear quarter window. (The front rear controls on the control units do NOT indicate a dual system)

These pressure switches also known to fail, sometimes the wires drop off or become disconnected.

Depending on engine fitted ( :25: another poster who thinks we are mystics) there are other sensors that can inhibit operation and cause the flashing displaying - e.g. the icing sensor on the evaporator (Ford engines AFAIK))

Its still the cheapest and simplest to use vagcom and look at what faults are being reported.

You could be chasing your tail for ages if it turns out to just be a stuck hot/cold flap or something equally common .

The diagnostics will definitely identify the cause of the problem.

And don't forget that the compressor will not kick in if the ambient temperature is below 5 deg C.

Kwik Fit were doing recharges really cheap and if it does make the temp colder they wont charge a penny

WHAT? if they do the job correctly and your ac works they wont charge you? nice now if they did the same deal on tyres! as not charging you for tyres with more tread on when you drive out than when you drove in ;)

Kwik Fit were doing recharges really cheap and if it doesn't make the temp colder by 10% they wont charge a penny

Subject to managers discretion. Obviously in winter they dont stick to the 10% offer (see small print for full detail)

Well that goes without saying, allways read the small print.

Hi

Does anyone know of a good aircon specialist in the Aylesbury area? I've just bought a galaxy 03 110 TDI and the aircon doesn't work. The engine revs at idle don't flicker when the aircon is switched on as happened in my older Sharan so I'm assuming that the clutch isn't kicking in. I was tempted to try a
